I agree speaker cable design is half science and half art, what is measured as good engineering results may not sound good...even for power amplifier does low distortion really matter? I have heard some amp spec at 0.3% distortion that sound better than those spec at 0.001% distortion...
or change a power cord and it affects the total system sound, this kind of effect cannot totally explain by engineering fact...

You can see them as tools to balance ur sys sound
On a lighter note, reminds me of a quote from GB Shaw.QuoteMiss Duncan:
wouldn't the law of weakest link in the chain apply, in that case? End up with worst characteristics of both rather than best of both?Power cords Interconnects can be mixed as well
with $300 budget, you can try out a used pair of Nordost blue heaven which is within this price range. But Nordost cable tends to raise the mid and high but weaker bass ,may not match to all system. which brand of pre and power amp that you use to drive the dynaudio contours?
Wildrain,
You bring up a good point. The tricky part is that sometimes we mistake high frequency noise as air and ambience, while loose bass is perceived to be big and impressive.
Some of the transformer based solutions I've heard blunt dynamics or sound too dark, dead or lifeless. The amount of loading the transformer is handling also plays a big part.
