Quite a few are DIYers here...I for one do quite a lot but have slowed down a bit of late due to time and available space to work.

HiFi Audio Equipment Discussion / Re: DC offset in power line

I seem to recall there is some easy way to kill such DC offsets with a bridge rectifier and some caps (I could be wrong tho)...they are also known to wreak havoc with toroidal transformers too I think.

I got Dirac going on the Emotiva XMC-1 ... impressive looking results but not using it while a rearrange things - before, after and combined...2 channel settings only

Belden make some pretty decent cables and especially used in the pro markets where good transmission and durability are key. My Linkwitz speakers are all Belden 2, 4 or 8 core and never any complaints.

Unfortunately I can't recall the exact location but maybe could find it on google maps as i did once before years ago.

visited this amazing Sushi bar and had the best meal ever in japan, I think all in was about 11,000Y for 2 and never ate and drank so much...the sumo wrestlers got there too as their pics are all on the walls. The sushi chiller was carved out of a ~20' tree trunk !!! we had grilled fugu in broth and what them make chawanmushi from scratch for us. only one customer could speak some english there so was a challenge to order but basically we said fedd feed us until we say stop. we went back 2 more times, took a photo with the mom and pop owners and sent a nice framed print back of them with us with out friends - must do that place again, even worth a special trip.

Looks like a fun trip...musty tell my friends who have family there and an apartment I have stayed in once or twice...time to go there again me thinks.

I have a friend who's company makes online UPS/Regulators and they have a new model coming out that I will be trailing - its not really for HIFI use but is active regeneration and can handle from 1-3KV and even larger models.

Only issue with this kind of gear is its either noisy (physically) or very expensive if silent - normally hifi types.

I will install the sample perhaps down in my kitchen area where the noise will not be an issue (fridge etc all there) and away from my HT/HIFI - but connect to my dedicated power runs.

Why do you have to use wireless? Cost would be much less if you used wired speakers back to your receiver. Wireless you still have to run power to each speaker and you also have the issues of sound synchronisation to deal with too, not to mention your coverage as you have noted issues with where to place the transmitter.

You could opt for something like the Oppo Sonica Speakers I guess and operate as a group - I could help you with that but integration of a Mic and voice broadcast gets difficult to manage. Then you still have the wifi coverage issues unless you something like a commercial grade wifi AP

HiFi Audio Equipment Discussion / Re: Tube amplifier basics

I have fond memories of the JBL L100T I used to have...space constraints meant they had to be sold off, along with a slightly smaller 3 way JBL that I can't recall the model now...Vintage JBL and Klipcsh were some great speakers in their day and still can hold their own. Now my only vintage set is a pair of Yamaha NS1000M's

Gone are the days of the renowned Japanese Hifi speakers it seems.

Tubes too are a second class citizen ... Lux made some great gear back then too. I still have a couple of KT88 based rigs but seldom use now - nothing fancy, but sometimes fire them up for some warm old school sounds.

HiFiCafe Coffee and Tea discussion / Re: Cafe Visit in San Francisco

Seattle might be the birthplace of Starbucks...I think Australia is the death place of Starbucks. I think they closed nearly every store there in the end only a hand full left. And a good thing too if you ask me....I personally think compared to Starbucks that McCafe makes a better cup, but this is still at the bottom of the espresso drinks quality chain. I would sooner drink a $6 bottle of water than pay for a Starbucks coffee.

The likes of David Shomer (world champ barista) put Seattle coffee scene back on the map IIRC and now it's not too hard to find a decent espresso based coffee in most cities of the world.

Italy is still hard to beat as its the water there that makes the biggest contribution to their world beating results.
